There is more bad news for consumers who rely on over-the-counter medications for pain management.  Recent research from the University of Washington found that those who take acetaminophen — best known as Tylenol — regularly for some time might be putting themselves at an increased risk for developing certain blood cancers.

“We found that high use of acetaminophen, one of the most frequently used medications worldwide, was associated with an almost twofold increased risk of incident hematologic malignancies,” said lead researcher Dr. Roland Walter, an assistant professor of medicine in the division of hematology.

So what are people suffering with chronic pain to do when there are few options in conventional care?
Americans with chronic ailments and pain have another option to consider – homeopathy.  Homeopathy is a 200-year-old system of medicine used successfully by over 200 million people worldwide.  It has a laudable and extensively documented clinical record and there are literally hundreds of high quality, peer-reviewed basic science, pre-clinical and clinical studies showing its effects.

In 2005, Claudia Witt M.D. and her colleagues conducted a multicentre cohort study with 103 primary care practices (with additional specialization in homeopathy) in Germany and Switzerland.

A total of 3,981 patients participated in the study (BMC Public Health 2005, 5:115) including 2,851 adults (29% men, mean age 42.5 ± 13.1 years; 71% women, 39.9 ± 12.4 years) and 1,130 children (52% boys, 6.5 ± 3.9 years; 48% girls, 7.0 ± 4.3 years).

Ninety-seven percent of all diagnoses for these patients were for chronic ailments with an average duration of over 8 years.   During homeopathic treatment, disease severity decreased significantly (p < 0.001) between baseline and 24 months (adults from 6.2 ± 1.7 to 3.0 ± 2.2; children from 6.1 ± 1.8 to 2.2 ± 1.9). Physicians’ assessments yielded similar results. In addition, for adults and young children, major improvements were observed for quality of life.  The researchers concluded that their findings indicate that homeopathic medical therapy may play a beneficial role in the long-term care of patients with chronic diseases.
